Review: Midnight Menagerie Loakahn Fantasy Dildo

Loakahn, with its alien details and climbing tendrils, is a beautiful sci-fi inspired dildo with an intimidating shape and girthy swell. The design’s details are just what I love to see on a fantasy dildo, promising delicious texture while offering an otherworldly fantasy.

Design & Specs

Midnight Menagerie is an Australia-based fantasy sex toy maker aiming to bring fantasy to reality. With knots, flares, tentacles, and more, they have a well-rounded lineup (including a few models designed by yours truly) which shines with their beautiful pours and premium pigments. They’ve recently acquired two models from recently shut down maker Erotic Effect that I enjoy and highly recommend keeping an eye out for (Krothur and Aerlyn).

Loakahn, a dildo with a thick swell, has a delicious amount of detail curving around its sides, with bumps on the outermost curve and ripples along the head. It evokes the image of an alien or deep sea creature with tentacle-esque details, particularly in the shimmery blue-based set of colors that I chose.

I debated a bit over calling this a swell or a knot. It could be read either way, but most angles look more swell-like and it doesn’t feel as sudden as a knot, so I will refer to it as a swell.

My Loakahn has a shimmery blue-purple highlight over black. A little bit of the black shows through along the base, which was an intentional part of my custom request. A similar highlight across the full toy can be ordered as a highlight of color #3 over black.

In medium size, it has about 6.75″ usable length, head girth of 1.5″ diameter (4.75″ circumference), and maximum girth of 2.75×2.25″ diameter (7.75″ circumference) on the swell. In medium firmness 00-50, it’s sturdy, but has some give when squished. The finish is more matte than shiny, giving it a skinlike feel.

The model is one of Midnight Menagerie’s older ones, so while the quality is pretty good, it has small blemishes and the finish is less shiny. The model may be updated in the future to bring it in line with newer models. Personally, it falls within my expected quality range for a toy, and I like a less shiny finish, so I’m pleased with the production quality.

Medium Loakahn starts at $125 AUD ($86 USD) and a custom pour with a highlight would cost $130 AUD ($90 USD).

My Loakahn arrived with a medium size Myrddin (which I will also be reviewing soon) and a branded ownership card listing model name, firmness, and special traits.

In Use (Vaginal)

The top portion is easy to insert on account of its relative slimness. The ribbed texture of the head feels nice at my entrance, but I can’t really feel it once it’s past my entrance since it’s on the slim side.

The ridges just beneath the head make for a very strong texture spot: It’s strong enough to delight me if I’m fully turned on, and I can feel it for about an inch inside my entrance since it’s wider than the head. If I’m still warming up, then I need to use extra lube so that it doesn’t aggravate me.

My body naturally pauses above the swell, which has a dramatic increase in girth. As long as I’m warmed up and lubed up, it enters easily with a push. The swell is easier to insert at some rotations than others. It feels different at each angle, with the texture and shape varying.

Loakahn’s top side, showcasing the ridges underneath the head. This is the angle at which it looks most knot-like.

At some angles, the swell presses against my G-spot, which is something I enjoy from swells. Unlike most swells, Loakahn’s shaft is oblong: It’s thicker in one direction than the other, like an oval. While a spherical shape pushes in all directions and makes for a very filling feeling (typically with a stretch), Loakahn’s oblong shaft puts distinct pressure in two opposite directions. It’s similar to the kind of pressure that a strong flare has in that I can feel the specific spots it’s pressing against. It’s not what I normally look for when I’m after a knot or swell, but it still feels good, and it’s still filling (though to a lesser extent than a rounded swell).

I was a little worried that the texture on the thickest part could be painful—I’m sensitive to texture on knots and swells—but thankfully, it’s just right. The vertical orientation of most of the texture, plus the low frequency of the bumps along the tendrils, makes it feel good without getting overwhelming. The harshest texture comes from the ridges underneath the head; everything else is gentler.

The firmness and girth combined make the swell feel pretty thick and hard, and the firmness makes the texture under the head quite strong, so the dildo does not feel soft or squishy in use. I like it that way, but it requires me to be warmed up and ready for a somewhat intense experience.

There isn’t much space after the swell, so keeping the swell inserted is difficult unless sitting directly on it (with something propping it up at least a couple of inches). Even then, the stretch is closer to my entrance than I would like it to be. Since it doesn’t stay in place well, Loakahn feels best with constant movement.

The base is easy to hold, but gets slick after inserting the dildo all the way. When thrusting, my fingers are somewhat strained from pushing inside because of the force needed to push the swell inside, but the base offers some amount of leverage. I prefer thrusting because rotating Loakahn changes how the swell feels, and that’s not as easy to do when riding.

My current collection from Midnight Menagerie: Amyntas, Myrddin, Loakahn, and Wayse.

Overall

Loakahn is a gorgeous dildo with a distinct design and thick swell. The oblong swell offers more focused pressure than a traditional rounded swell, and the texture ranges from moderate to strong, which is fun for thrusting. However, the lack of stem after the swell prevents it from locking inside, keeping the stretch close to the entrance and making it difficult to sit and enjoy it.

If Loakahn’s design ever receives an update, I would like to see a slimmer and slightly longer stem. Right now, the stem only slims down from some angles, but I think it may need to slim down all around in order to be effective.

If you like a moderately intense experience, Loakahn should be fun in your typical preferred size and firmness. If you’re not sure, I would suggest opting for a softer firmness to make the texture and swell more comfortable.

If you’re after something filling all around or a swell that locks in nicely with less texture, then I would suggest waiting for Midnight Menagerie to launch Krothur on their website, since that works out much more nicely as a filling swell.
