The thicker the better—until it just won’t fit, in which case, oops. Eyes bigger than my holes and all that. Large Avir from Fantasy Grove was too big for me for a long time, making it a goal to work towards. Now that I’m finally able to use it, I’ve been enjoying just how full it makes me feel; it’s the girthiest dildo I’ve used to date.
Design & Specs
Fantasy Grove features characters from a mythical grove, with products ranging from high-detail fantastical designs to beginner-friendly, harness-compatible models. They excel in creating unique colorations, crafting masterpieces with difficult techniques that take a lot of skill. I’ve already reviewed their popular harness-friendly Daybreak dildo, pierced Jackalope dildo, and G-spot focused Changeling dildo, among others, most of which I’ve found to be good fits for my body.
Avir has a very thick upper swell and gentle texture that evokes the shape of feathers and wings, with a frame like a bird taking flight. The shape is suitable to the theme: Avir is a Ziz, a creature from Jewish mythology which is similar in appearance to a gryphon. The character art on Fantasy Grove’s site shows Avir as having a feathery dinosaur-like body with multiple sets of wings and fancy feathers like a bird of paradise or a phoenix.
The model called to me when it first launched in 2021. It looked so thick, as if it could fill me up like a knot and press against my G-spot while doing so, and the large seemed like a viable goal with its maximum girth of 3″ diameter (9″ circumference). If I could handle Noax (which caps out at 2.7″ across), then surely I could handle Avir.
I figured it would be more approachable in soft firmness 00-30 compared to my usual preferred medium firmness 00-50; softer means squishier, and it’s recommended to go softer when getting something huge, both to make it easier to use and because thicker silicone is more resistant to squishing than thinner silicone. Avir’s thickness means this is squishy on the outside, but feels denser at its core.
The color is Avir’s Essential. Fantasy Grove doesn’t really have Essential colors anymore, but they allow a whole load of customizable colors alongside their inventory. It’s a fade from blue at the base to pink at the tip, with a sparkly white highlight over top. The highlight makes Avir’s details stand out.
Large Avir starts at $130 in inventory. A custom large Avir with a two-color fade and a highlight would be $155.
In Use
Avir is thick.
Very thick.
When I first got it, it was too thick for me to comfortably take the swell. I would try, and it would stretch me so much that it was painful (both internally and the skin around my entrance), yet it wouldn’t go in unless I used a ton of lube and pushed it inside anyway, at which point it was simultaneously amazing and painful. (Did it work? Yes. Do I recommend it? No. Listen to your body.)
Since then, I’ve sized up—that is, I’ve had more practice using steadily larger dildos, learning to stretch so that I can take one this thick. Dildos like Krothur and BullBoyFF helped me become more accustomed to thicker dildos while I worked my way up.
You may be wondering: Did it actually take me five years to size up? The answer is kind of yes, kind of no. Initially, I didn’t set out to size up. I didn’t intentionally practice regularly pushing my limits and getting used to larger dildos. Slowly, I got accustomed to larger dildos as my collection grew, so I got used to it by following where my desire led me.
It’s only within the past 4-6 months that I intentionally worked on sizing up to take thicker dildos. I used my large dildos and plugs more frequently, pushed myself to use my thickest tapered dildos and see how long I could stay stretched at my limits, and used moisturizing lube to keep myself hydrated and stretchy.
It worked and I’m really excited that I can now manage Avir. But I still have days where the stretch is too much and I have to set Avir aside.
Avir is very manageable as long as I’m properly warmed up. That warm-up entails using some of my largest toys, particularly large Ember (which is relatively easy to work up to thanks to the taper), large Changeling, or Flicker V5. Riding (or simply being plugged, in the case of Flicker) and arousal both stretch me out, so once I’m comfortable with any of those, I have a chance of fitting Avir.
Avir requires lube. Lots of lube. I need to push it in to get it past my entrance, but it only feels slightly more than what I could comfortably take, making it a lot more approachable than it used to be. The roundness at the top makes it hard to get in without that push. I also have to orient it a certain way such that the underside is against my front wall (like doggystyle), otherwise it’s not comfortable to insert, but I can rotate it once inside.
Avir’s the thickest stretch I’ve ever felt. I’ve taken 3″ across before, but that was a particular flared dildo, which offers very targeted pressure more than a stretching sensation. Avir feels like a plug, stretching all around without poking precisely against particular areas. The girth and shape are well designed for broad G-spot pressure.
The deeper a dildo goes, the less I’m used to a stretch. Avir’s top-heavy swell and goes deep enough to stretch me where no dildo has stretched me before. That makes it both more difficult and more rewarding: I want the stretch, but I definitely need time to get used to it before it’s comfortable.
Once inserted, I stay in place and wait for a couple of minutes as I acclimate to the stretch. The almost-pain of the stretch fades quickly, leaving only the strain of the stretch itself (which can be good or bad, depending on if you like it or not) and the pleasure of it pressing up against my front wall.
I move Avir in and out maybe an inch or two at a time in a gentle grind. Any movement shifts exactly where it’s stretching me out, which emphasizes the feeling of fullness—both the pleasure and the strain. The shape and size of the swell ensure it stays inside without much risk of coming out until I want it to.
While some swells are fun to pop in and out, Avir is too intense for me to do so comfortably. When I play with it that way, I only do that once or twice. I enjoy the sensation of it being inside of me more than the sensation of inserting and removing it.
That said, the first time it goes in during a session is the most intense feeling. Despite the almost-pain of the stretch, the sudden sensation of something so filling pressing against all my walls is amazing.
I can’t quite define the texture in use; it’s too soft to feel like much, but it does increase the friction, making it more enjoyable. Perhaps that’s for the best: Strong texture on the thickest part of a knot or swell can feel unusually uncomfortable for me.
The shaft beneath the swell is relatively slim, making it lock in excellently, but also making it difficult to maneuver. I tend to sink down on it from a riding position while using a hand to stabilize it, after which I can shift positions to ride or thrust. The base is easy to hold and broad enough that I can avoid getting it all covered in lube, but lacks leverage for powerful thrusting.
In soft firmness 00-30, it’s softer than I usually go for, making it a touch easier to insert due to being slightly squishier. However, because of the girth, it ends up feeling quite dense. It reminds me of the sensation of dual density: Its presence is like a firm rubber ball, but the surface remains soft and squishy.
Overall
Large Avir has a powerful swell that I had to work up to and that feels satisfyingly thick while stretching me out. Although the stretch itself starts out uncomfortable, I love a massive monster fantasy and that just backs up the feeling. It works best for gentle grinding while enjoying the sheer girth.
Although I love the large, the size is above my comfort zone. I can’t use it often since I need to work up to it, and I tend to enjoy active thrusting and riding more than sitting still or moving slowly.
I would recommend Avir at your girth limit if you enjoy a strong filling sensation and don’t mind the discomfort of an intense stretch, with the advice that you will probably need to warm up thoroughly and you may want to consider going for a softer firmness than usual. Otherwise, I would suggest dropping down to something within your specs; the shape is well designed to lock in, so I imagine it should feel filling even when it’s not at your limits.
